Arizona's Centennial is Dawning

Three Saguaros Greet the Dawn of Another Beautiful Arizona Morning!

The State of Arizona will be 100 years old on the 14th of February, 2012.

There must be a million things you need to do before this date. This page was created to give you some links to great things to do over the years we wait patiently to be the 48th state to reach 100 years of age. Later on, you might even be able to find neat things right here on this site.

Did you know statehood was delayed due to a disagreement between the President of the United States and the People of Arizona?

Arizonans wanted a pure Direct Democracy, the United States is a Representative Democracy.

In 1910 Congress passed the enabling legislation for a constitutional convention for Arizona.

February 9, 1911, Arizona voters approved the new Constitution.

August , 1911, the U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution calling for statehood for Arizona.

August 15, 1911, the resolution was vetoed by President William Howard Taft because he strongly opposed the recall of judges.  Within a week Congress passed another joint resolution excluding judges from recall.

December 12, 1911 Arizona voters exempted judges from recall in the general election.

February 14, 1912, President Taft signed the proclamation making Arizona the 48th State.

November 5, 1912, the Arizona State Constitution was amended making judges subject to recall in Arizona's first general election as a state.  In the end, Arizonans got it their way after all.
